"Richard Thompson has just arrived at gate 1"

Mit diesem Satz kommentierte Mick Bullard,  Steward auf dem Cropredy-Festival, Drummer von Freeway Jam, und so ganz nebenbei auch noch ein ausgesprochen freundlicher Zeitgenosse, einen heftigen Regenguß, der Dinge nass werden ließ, die besser trocken geblieben wären. Dave Pegg verteilte gerade gönnerhaft Programmhefte und lehnte eine Zigarette mit den Worten "it's too early" ab.

These words were said by Mick Bullard, working as a steward at Cropredy as well as being the drummer of Freeway Jam and a really nice chap, too. He made this comment because of a heavy rain shower that was wettening some things which better should have stayed dry. At the same moment Dave Pegg generously distributed some free programmes and refused to take a cigarette by saying  "it's too early".

Ist das der Aufmacher für den Bericht über Cropredy 2003 ? Nicht wirklich.

Forever Young ist gerade nachts um halb zwei aus Cropredy heimgekehrt, ab Luxemburg 3 Stunden lang begleitet vom hell leuchtenden Mond - frei nach dem Motto:

"do you believe that clear white light is goin' to guide us home?"

Do you think this stands as an essential opening for this year's Cropredy festival ? It really isn't !
Forever Young has just arrived at home at 1:30 a.m. after a 14 hours drive from Cropredy to Stuttgart, Germany. For the last 3 hours (from Luxemburg on) the journey had been accompanied by a bright shining moon - reminding me to some famous lyrics:

"do you believe that clear white light is goin' to guide us home?"

Zunächst einmal das, was für mich persönlich enttäuschend war:  Ich hatte mir zwar seit Jahren Albert Lee gewünscht, und er kam auch. Aber ich wollte ihn zusammen mit Jerry Donahue Country boy  spielen sehen. Dazu kam's leider nicht. Maartin Allcock und Simon Nicol sollten nach meinem Wunsch Rhapsoblue in D gemeinsam aufführen. Auch dazu kam's nicht. Und der grandiose Dennis Locorriere (was für eine Stimme !) hätte doch ruhig zusammen mit Fairport einen der letzten Dr.Hook-Hits, Baby makes her blue jeans talk, singen können. Das witzige Arrangement hätten die Fairports sicherlich hinbekommen. All das sollte nicht sein. War es deswegen ein für "Forever Young" enttäuschendes Wochenende ?
Keineswegs !

At first I'd like to mention some personal dissapointments. For many years I had been asking Dave Pegg to book Albert Lee. And finally he was there this year. But I wanted to see him perform Country boy,  the old classic, together with Jerry Donahue. It didn't happen. Another request of mine had been Rhapsoblue in D  by Simon Nicol and Maartin Allcock together. It didn't happen as well.
And what about Dennis Locorriere  (what a great voice !) ? He could have sung one of the late Dr. Hook hits, Baby makes her blue jeans talk,  accompanied by Fairport, who surely would have been able to manage to perform the witty original arrangement. Another request of mine which couldn't be fulfilled. Was it a dissapointing weekend therefore ?
Not at all !

1. Tag, Donnerstag, 07.08.2003  /  First day, thursday, August 7th, 2003

Jonah Jones begrüßte das Cropredy-Publikum pünktlich um 16.30 Uhr am Donnerstag. Zuvor hatte ich mich noch blamiert, als mich mein Freund Paul Smith jemandem vorstellte, der sich auch sehr nett mit mir unterhielt. Am Ende verabschiedete ich mich und fragte noch einmal nach seinem Namen. Es war Ray Laidlaw, der Drummer von Lindisfarne, und ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob er etwas gekränkt war, nicht erkannt worden zu sein. Mir war's schon ziemlich peinlich, aber ein netter Begrüßungskuss
von Kellie While, die mir gleich anschließend über den Weg lief, hob meine Laune wieder um ein Beträchtliches. Es war ein guter Anfang, bevor die erste Band auf die Bühne trat.

Jonah Jones, compere on thursday, gave a big hello to the audience right in time at 4:30 p.m... Right before that Forever Young made himself a bit ridiculous when friend Paul Smith introduced him to a nice guy, who came up with some nice conversation after which I asked him for his name. I'm not sure if he was kind of feeling offended because of this. I had been talking to Ray Laidlaw, drummer of Lindisfarne. I felt kind of painful for this, but my mood was getting better, when right after that
Kellie While said "hello" to me, giving me a kiss. A good start before the first band came on stage, I think.

Jonah Jones sagte, das Wetter während des Festivals werde hervorragend sein, und daß wir alle dies' nach den beiden vorangegangenen Jahren sehr wohl verdient hätten. Er warnte angesichts der hohen Temperaturen vor allzu großem Alkoholgenuss.

"The weather will be glorious. We've earned it after the last couple of years", said Jonah Jones and he asked the people to be careful with alcohol because of the hot weather.

Colvin Quarmby waren eine gute Einheizerband. Sie bestätigten den positiven Eindruck, den ihr auf dieser Website zuvor schon besprochenes Album Beth's Electric Birthday, von dem sie auch mehrere Titel spielten, u.a. das großartige Bone in a dinosaur, gemacht hatte. Das Zusammenspiel des Quartetts war sehr überzeugend, und sie durften nicht ohne Zugabe gehen, die da betitelt war:  "there's something wrong with the pictures that I'm painting."

Colvin Quarmby were a good warm-up at Cropredy 2003. They confirmed to be as good as my impression had been after reviewing their latest album Beth's Electric Birthday. Much of the material from this was played, including the wonderful Bone in a dinosaur. Their togetherness was impressive, and they weren't allowed to go away before playing an encore which was titled  "there's something wrong with the pictures that I'm painting."

Nach dem Konzert traf ich die Jungs und fragte, warum sie denn bei dieser Hitze in Schwarz gekleidet seien. Sie bedauerten
es, aber es sei ihr Image.

I met the guys after the gig and asked them why they were wearing black dresses in spite of the heat and they said to be
sorry, but they couldn't change their image for this.

Zwischendurch traf ich bei bester Laune Ulla Hilger, und sie lud mich prompt zu einem schmackhaften 6X ein. Sie erzählte mir, daß sie sehr glücklich sei, daß die Mark Gillespie Band endlich in Cropredy auftreten dürfe  (mehr weiter unten) und daß alle Leute, die mit diesen Musikern Bekanntschaft gemacht hätten, bereits total begeistert wären. Das steigerte natürlich meine Vorfreude auf das Konzert am Freitag. Ron Schut, Fanzine-Macher aus Holland, war begeistert von meiner Idee, Dave Pegg vorzuschlagen,  für nächstes Jahr Golden Earringals Hauptband am Freitag abend zu engagieren. Am ADA-Plattenstand versuchte ich immer wieder, Neil Wayne abzupassen. Er hatte mir per E-Mail ein Besprechungsexemplar der neuen Swarbrick-Box zum halben Preis versprochen. Es wurde ein permanenter erfolgloser Versuch. Mr. Wayne war nie anwesend. Die Beschäftigten am Stand waren nach einer Weile so genervt, daß einer von ihnen mir eine Zeichnung machte, wie denn Neil Wayne aussehe, damit ich nicht immer fragen müsse, ob er da sei.

Meanwhile I met Ulla Hilger being in best mood, and she promptly invited me for a 6X. She told me she'd be very happy that her favourites, the Mark Gillespie Band, finally had been booked for Cropredy, and that all the people who had met those guys would love them deerly alreday. This caused me looking forward very much  to their gig next day. Ron Schut, maker of the dutch fanzine on Fairport, was very excited about my proposal to ask Dave Pegg to book Golden Earring as next year's headliner on friday. Inbetween I always tried to meet up with Neil Wayne at the ADA record stall. He had promised me by e-mail to give me a copy of the Swarbrick box for half the price to be reviewed on this website. For the whole festival time I wasn't lucky to catch him. After a while the staff at the stall wasn't happy about me always asking if he's there. So one of the guys made me a painting of Mr. Wayne, so that I wouldn't have to ask anymore if he 's there, but check him out by myself.

Meet On The Ledge traten gegen 18.00 Uhr als zweite Band auf die Bühne Cropredys und absolvierten einen astreinen Folkrock-Set. Für mich war Banks of the sweet primroses, als Jig gespielt, ein echtes Highlight. Bester Wortwitz ihrerseits war, daß "naive" umgekehrt gesprochen "evian" sei.

Meet On The Ledge got on stage at about 6 p.m., being the second band at this year's Cropredy. They played a really fine set of Folk-Rock, and to me their version of Banks of the sweet primroses, being played as a jig, was the utmost highlight. The best joke they made was that "naive" spoken the other way would be "evian".

Astreinen Blues-Rock präsentierte die Trevor Burton Band. Burton war 1966 Gründungsmitglied von The Move gewesen und ist ein alter Kumnpel von Dave Pegg. Er spielte auch lange Zeit mit Steve Gibbons zusammen. Mehrüber Burton. Die Band spielte einen gute Stimmung machenden Set, der natürlich auch zahlreiche Coverversionen beinhaltete. Darunter waren Further on up the road
("I'm gonna hurt you like you hurt me") und eine grandiose Version von Dave Mason's Feelin' alright  ("I'm not feelin' too good
myself"). Ein tolles Konzert, und "Forever Young" wippte im 12-Takt-Rhythmus über das Feld.

Inspiring Blues Rock was played by the Trevor Burton Band. Burton was a founder member of The Move in 1966, and he is an old
pal of Dave Pegg. He also worked with Steve Gibbons for many years.  More about Trevor Burton. Their set included some fine
cover versions of old classics, for example Further on up the road  ("I'm gonna hurt you like you hurt me") and a great reading
of Dave Mason's Feelin' alright  ("I'm not feeling too good myself"). A really good set ! "Forever Young" was grooving around
the field in 12-bar-time.

Den Abschluß des ersten Abends bildeten Lindisfarne, die viele Fans zusätzlich angelockt hatten. Leider hatte ich hier keine Gelegenheit zum Fotografieren. Überraschenderweise begannen sie den Set gleich mit der Newcastle-Hymne schlechthin, Fog on the Tyne. Prächtige Stimmung war somit von Beginn an garantiert. Run for home, ihr letzter Charterfolg (1978), animierte einen Großteil des Publikums zum Mitsingen. Mein persönlicher Favorit ist und bleibt aber Clear white light   (siehe Vorwort zu diesem Festivalbericht !), eingeleitet von einem mitreissenden Schlagzeug-Solo. Lindisfarne überraschte mit einem sehr lebendigen Set. Die Band hat ja auch schon ein paar Jährchen auf dem Buckel. Nicht auf dem Programm stand eine weitere Hymne, nämlich We can swing together .

Closing the first day were Lindisfarne, who had drawn a lot of fans to the field. Unfortunately I had no chance to make any photographs. Surprisingly their set started with Fog on the tyne, merely their hometown Newcastle's anthem. But therefore the mood was reaching a climax very soon. And it lasted for almost 2 hours, what more do you ask for? Run for home, their recent chart hit  (1978) caused most of the audience to sing along. My personal favourite was, and still is Clear white light   (see the foreword to this Cropredy report), introduced by a nice little drum solo. Lindisfarne played a surprisingly lively set. They've been on the road for a while now, as we all know. Another anthem, We can swing together,  wasn't included in the set.

Zufrieden begab ich mich zurück zum Zelt. Dieses Jahr hatten wir dank Freund "Big Andy" (oben abgebildet), der seit Unzeiten mit dem Wohnwagen anreist, die Möglichkeit als seine Nachbarn auf der Caravan Site zu campen, hatten also nur etwa 300 Meter zum Hauptfeld zu laufen. Mit der Gewissheit, einen schönen ersten Tag erlebt zu haben, genoss ich barfuß das leicht feuchte und kühle Gras unter einem sternenklaren Himmel. Zudem hatte ich eine gute Tat vollbracht, als ich Ric Sanders eine Vergrößerung des Fotos mit seinen Eltern, dem "chief indian" und Fan Emma (siehe Cropredy 1999) übergab. Er war außer sich vor Freude und zeigte es allen Umstehenden, was mich sehr stolz machte.

In a happy mood I went back to my tent. This year we had the chance to camp on the caravan site, thanks to my friend "Big Andy" (see picture above) who's been a caravan regular for decades now. It meant we didn't have to walk more than 300 metres to arrive on the main site. I was sure to have experienced a perfect first day, and I enjoyed the coolness of the humid grass under a clear sky full of stars. Sorry, if my English causes a smile instead of being poetic, as it was meant ! Additionally I had caused a lot of joy when I gave a photograph to Ric Sanders - showing his parents together with the "chief indian" and young fan Emma (photographed at Cropredy 1999). Ric was very excited and showed it to everybody around, which made me really proud.

2. Tag, Freitag, 08.08.2003  /  Second day, friday, August 8th, 2003

Ich wachte sehr früh auf, nachdem ich auf der neuen Luftmatratze, am Tag zuvor bei Littlewoods in Banbury für nur 10 £ gekauft, sehr gut geschlafen hatte. Die alte hatte ihren Geist aufgegeben.
Ich beschloß, auf Feld 3 duschen zu gehen und mußte trotz der frühen Uhrzeit von 7.15 Uhr eine Dreiviertelstunde anstehen. Ich fühlte mich sehr wohl hinterher, und bei meiner Rückkehr wurde ich von "Big Andy", der für seine Tochter und deren Freundin ebenfalls eine neue Luftmatratze hatte besorgen müssen, mit einem echten englischen Frühstück begrüßt. Meine Freunde Roland und Ute stellten fest, daß sie ebenfalls Bedarf nach einer neuen Schlafunterlage hatten. Ein gutes Wochenende für Littlewoods, denke ich. Aber was passierte sonst noch?

I woke up very early, having slept well on a new airbed which I had bought the day before at Littlewoods in Banbury for only 10 £, because the old one hadn't kept the air inside. I decided to go for a shower at field 3, and I had to queue for 45 minutes in spite of the time (7.15). I felt very well afterwards, came back to the tent, and "Big Andy" had started to prepare a real english breakfast. By the way, Andy had had to buy a new airbed for his daughter and her friend the day before as well. Roland and Ute, my german friends, realized they were in need of a new airbed as well. It seemed to be a good weekend for Littlewoods. But what else happened ?

In Banbury erstand ich bei "Records & Savings" (oder so ähnlich) sehr preisgünstig die DVD von Cropredy 2001 und die Dennis Locorriere - CD "Out Of The Dark", auf der sich eine grandios groovende, von Gospelchor begleitete, Version von Sylvia's mother  findet, die mein Freund Roland auf der Rückfahrt von seinem Auto aus gleich mehrmals laut zu Gehör brachte. Mit dieser Musik, und weiteren neuen Luftmatratzen im Gepäck, kamen wir zurück zum Zelt und lauschten dem ausgesprochen witzigen Soundcheck der Mark Gillespie Band. Im Hinterhof eines Pubs in Banbury hatten wir übrigens ein erstes Pint genossen. Dort fand sich ein Käfig, in dem sich zwei Frettchen tummelten und ziemlich durstig ständig am Wassertrog hingen. Es war, besonders für englische Verhältnisse abartig warm. In der Sonne war es kaum auszuhalten. Das mit den Frettchen mußten wir natürlich Birgit, der Angetrauten Fred Bakers, erzählen. Wir sagten, wir hätten Freds kleine Brüder getroffen  (Fredchen). Es war nicht so einfach, das auf Englisch zu erklären.

At "Records & Savings"  (or so) I picked up the chance to buy copies of the Cropredy 2001 DVD and of Dennis Locorriere's album Out Of The Dark, on which you can find a really groovy version of Sylvia's mother, accompanied by a wonderful gospel choir. My friend Roland played this very loudly on his car-CD-player when driving back to the campsite. Having brought these items, as well as some new airbeds, we arrived back at the tent and were having big fun listening to a very witty soundcheck by the Mark Gillespie Band. Before that we had enjoyed a first beer in a beer garden at the rear of a pub in Banbury. Right in the corner of this area was a cage where two ferrets were always hanging around the water-troughs. The weather was really hot, especially if you are used to English weather. Ferrets are called "Frettchen" in German, and the pronounciation of it in German has got the same meaning as "little Fred". Of course we had to tell this story to Birgit, who is married to Fred Baker, saying we've met Fred's little brothers. It wasn't very easy to explain it in English. But Fred had his laugh in the end.

Mark Gillespie, obwohl gebürtiger Engländer, gab um 12.30 Uhr sein allererstes Konzert im Vereinigten Königreich. Sein Einfallsreichtum spiegelte sich gleich im ersten Stück namens Supersonic sunday, in das er spontan Textzeilen  ("in Cropredy in
the rain" ) über das Cricket-Match 2002, das er als Zuschauer erlebt hatte, mit einbaute. Von einigen wurde hinterher seine
Neigung, zwischen den Songs viel zu erzählen, kritisiert. Ich aber fand das sehr unterhaltsam, denn es wirkte nicht gespielt,
sondern spontan.

Mark Gillespie, although born there, had his very first UK gig at Cropredy on friday August 8th, 2003. His lyrical skills became obvious from the very first beginning. Into his song  Supersonic sunday  he spontaneously filled in some lines about Cropredy 2002 and the cricket match  ("in Cropredy in the rain"  ). He only had experienced this as a visitor. Mark Gillespie was being criticised afterwards for chatting too much inbetween the songs, but for me it was okay, and I found his banter very entertaining.

I believe ist ein Song über das Leben als Strassenmusiker in Deutschland, und er erklärte, man könne dabei sehr viel Geld verdienen, wenn die Polizei nicht kommt. Wenn sie aber käme, sage man keineswegs Schimpfworter zu ihnen, sondern spräche sie sehr höflich an, denn sie hätten Pistolen. Die Mark Gillespie Band zeigte sich als musikalisch sehr vielseitig. I miss my mummy , ein ironisch-gehässiges Lied gegen seinen Vater  (nicht ernst gemeint), beispielsweise ist ein astreiner Swing, geschmückt mit einem wunderbaren Bass-Solo. Interessierter Zuhörer in der ersten Reihe war P.J. Wright.

I believe  is a song about busking in Germany. Mark explained that you can make a lot of money with busking, in case the police won't come. But if it happened you'd have to be very friendly and not use words like "filth", because they have pistols. I miss my mummy ,  for example, turns out as really swinging, including a wonderful solo by bass player Peter. It's a very ironic song towards his father, not to be taken too serious. P.J. Wright was standing right in front of the stage listening to this music which he seemed to like a lot.

Gegen Ende behauptete er, schon eine Zugabe gespielt zu haben, die Leute hätten es nur nicht gemerkt, weil sie zuviel getrunken haben. In seinen letzten Song baute Mark spontan eine Strophe über Dave & Christine Pegg, Ulla Hilger und das Cropredy-Festival ein - "I'm gonna sign CDs that you buy. Thank you and goodbye" - es klang, als wäre das schon immer eine Strophe dieses Songs gewesen. Jonah Jones entließ ihn mit den Worten "a bloody good songsmith".  Und er hatte recht. Mark singt mit einer derartigen Hingabe und spürbar emotionalem Engagement. Die Band groovt, daß es nur eine Freude macht.
Danke Ulla, daß Du diese Jungs unermüdlich an Dave Pegg weiterempfohlen hast !!!

Ich fand die Mark Gillespie Band wirklich genial. Derselben Meinung waren viele Festival-Besucher, denn die Schlange beim CD-Signieren war ziemlich lang. Mark war übrigens mit seiner kompletten Familie (20-köpfig, courtesy of Peggy) in Cropredy.

Towards the end Mark maintained to have played an encore already, but the people wouldn't have noticed it being too drunk. He sang his final song and made up some lines about Dave & Christine Pegg, about Ulla Hilger, and about the festival at all:    "I'm gonna sign CDs that you buy. Thank you and goodbye"  - and it didn't seem to be a calculated thing. Jonah Jones outroduced Mark as "a bloody good songsmith".  And he really was right. Mark is a singer with lots of emotion and engagement. His band is grooving along and is obviously having a lot of fun. Thank you, Ulla, for asking Dave Pegg to book this band finally, without losing your patience !!! I found the Mark Gillespie Band being very exciting, and lots of Cropredians joined my opinion by causing a long queue when Mark Gillespie signed CDs afterwards. By the way Mark Gillespie had brought his whole family to Cropredy - 20 people, courtesy of Dave Pegg.

Den danach folgenden Keith Donnelly verpasste ich leider völlig, um einen Mittagsschlaf im Schatten zu halten. Was ich so mit einem Ohr mitbekam, erzählte er pausenlos Witze und spielte ab und zu einen Song.

I missed Keith Donnelly, who followed after, in favour of a nap in the shadow. I suppose he made a lot of jokes with the occasional song played inbetween.

Sehr gespannt war ich auf Equation, deren Mini-CD mir vorab Appetit auf einen variantenreichen, teilweise hart gespielten, Folk-Rock gemacht hatte. Ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Mein Lieblingsstück des Konzerts war jenes langsame über die Cousine von Sängerin Kathryn Roberts, deren Vater gestorben war.
Die Sängerin hat eine sehr schöne Stimme, die sie auch vielseitig einsetzt. Außerdem spielt sie bisweilen auch Klarinette und Querflöte. Die Bedeutung des Ausdrucks "cuckoo's nest", gleichzeitig einer der besten Nummern im Repertoire von Equation (erinnert Euch an Morris On !), unterstrich Kathryn Roberts durch entsprechende Körpersprache. Originell war es auch, ein Lied über Väter zu hören, die den Tag

hassen, an dem ihre Tochter zum ersten Mal eine Verabredung hat  (leider sind mir die Songtitel größtenteils nicht bekannt).
Jack & Suzanne handelt von einer Frau, die sich weigert, ihre Kreditkartenrechnung zu bezahlen.  Das Publikum wurde darüber aufgeklärt, das der Designer ihrer CD-Covers David Hughes heißt, mit dem uns bekannten Künstler gleichen Namens jedoch weder verwandt noch verschwägert ist. Equation sind eine hörbar gut aufeinander eingespielte Band mit solider Rhythmusgrundlage und immer wieder eingeschobenen Gitarrensoli von sowohl Sean Lakeman als auch James Crocker. Die aus Devon stammende Gruppe hatte bisher ihre hauptsächliche Fanbasis in den USA, wollen aber jetzt in ihrer Heimat Fuß fassen, um nicht immer wieder erklären zu müssen, daß mit Plymouth, ihrer Heimat, auf keinen Fall ein Auto gemeint ist.  Mehr über Equation.

I was looking to see Equation,  a band from Devon. A promo copy with selections from their last two outings had been a good appetizer. They played some fine folk rock, played very electric sometimes and being full of instrumental variety. My favourite was a song about singer Kathryn Robert's cousin, whose father had died. Kathryn Roberts has a fine voice, and she also plays the clarinette and flute from time to time. She expressed the meaning of "cuckoo's nest", which is also the title of a song  (remember Morris On !) by some easily to understand body language. She also sang a song about fathers, who hate the day when their daughter has got her first date  (unfortunately I'm not informed about the actual song titles very well). Jack & Suzanne tells the story of
a wife who refuses to pay her credit card bill. We were informed that David Hughes, designer of their CD covers is not the same person who is well known to Cropredians. Equation are a very fine band with good chemistry and a solid rhythm section. And Sean Lakeman, as well as James Crocker come up with some fine guitar solos. Equation have been based in the US mainly up to now, but they want to build up a following at home now, in order not to have to explain always that Plymouth  (their hometown) is not the make of a car.  More about the band

Es war abartig warm beim diesjährigen Festival, um die 35° Celsius im Schatten, und man war ständig um Wasser oder Schatten bemüht. Die Peggs hatten vorsorglich eine gute Wasserversorgung organisiert, und so konnte man sich regelmäßig sein T-Shirt an bereitgestellten Wasserhähnen nässen, da es ansonsten kaum auszuhalten war. Der beste Platz war direkt vor der Bühne wegen dem Schatten. Da meistens auch ein leichtes Lüftchen wehte, war es im Schatten recht angenehm.

The weather was incredibly hot this year, about 35° Celsius in the shadow, and people were looking for water or a place in the shadow permanently. The Peggs had supplied the site with extra water taps, so that you could wetten your shirt regularly. Otherwise you couldn't stand the heat. The best place was right in front of the stage because of the shadow. And as there was always a breeze blowing, it was perfect in the shadow.

Einen wunderbaren Auftritt hatte ab 17.00 Uhr David Hughes, begleitet von Gerry Conway, seitlich der Bühne am Schlagzeug sitzend und Kontrabassist Martin Brunsden, sowie zahlreichen Gästen. Er ist ein großartiger Gitarrist und glänzt auch mit witzigen Texten und Ansagen. In solchen Fällen wünsche ich mir, mein Englisch wäre perfekt, um alles verstehen zu können. Bemerkenswert war wieder einmal, mit welcher Hingabe sich Gerry Conway in die Songs hineinlebte. Für Gänsehaut pur sorgte der vierköpfige Damenchor in Person von Chris While, Julie Matthews, Jacqui Mc Shee und Helen Watson, als er Red car, ein grooviges Stück Musik zum Mitschnippen, vortrug. Zu der Nummer mit der Textzeile "the number you have dialled has not been recognized"  steuerte P.J. Wright seine gewohnt geniale Slidegitarre bei. David Hughes verwies auf sein bald erscheinendes neues Album mit dem Titel I can't explain,  das im September erscheinen soll. Den Titelsong hat er seiner Frau gewidmet, wobei er von einer Alltagssituation berichtete, in der sie von ihm eine Begründung für etwas Vorgefallenes verlangte. Leider ist mir die genaue Geschichte entfallen. Witzige Notiz am Rande:  ein Kästchen mit der Asche eines verstorbenen Freundes namens Colin war ihm mit auf die Bühne gegeben worden (ein Gefallen für einen anderen Freund). Leider vergaß er das Kästchen nach dem Auftritt, und es mußte die nächste Band auch noch miterleben.

Starting at 5 p.m. David Hughes played a wonderful gig being accompanied by Gerry Conway, placed at the side of the stage and Martin Brunsden on double bass, as well as a few guests. David Hughes is an excellent guitarist and his lyrics and inbetween banter are very witty. On such occasions I always wish my English were perfect in order to be able to understand everything. It was most impressive again to see Gerry Conway being involved in the songs he's accompanying with deep emotion. When Chris While, JulieMatthews, Jacqui Mc Shee and Helen Watson contributed some marvellous backing vocals to Red car  it caused goose pimples across the whole field. Fantastic ! P.J. Wright played some of his monstrous slide guitar licks to a song introducing the line "the number you have dialled has not been recognized" . David Hughes mentioned his soon to be released new album  I can't explain  and he told us that the title song was dedicated to his wife, telling a story (which I can't exactly remember) about an all day life situation when his wife wanted some explanation about what had happened which he couldn't explain.
Marginal note:David Hughes had done a favour for a friend taking an urn with another friend's ash on stage during the gig. Unfortunately he left it after the show and it had stay there while the next act was playing.   More about David Hughes

Spielfreude pur vermittelten die danach folgenden Bucket Boys. Obwohl aus Überresten der alten Sutherland Brothers & Quiver bestehend, spielten sie einen eher auf klassischem Rock'n Roll und gutem Gitarrenrock basierenden Set. Der fantastische Gitarrist Tim Renwick war einen Tag zuvor 51 Jahre alt geworden. Bekannte Cropredy-Gesichter fühlten sich bemüßigt, mit den Bucket Boys zu jammen. Begeisternd war zunächst einmal ein auf Elvis Presley's Guitar man  aufbauendes Medley mit Gitarrenlust pur, vorangetrieben von einem unwiderstehlichen Zugrhythmus. Ralph Mc Tell und Danny Thompson kamen dazu. Mc Tell sang 2 Stücke, eins davon Woody Guthrie's DoReMi.   Es folgte ein Rockabilly-Medley mit unter anderem Don't let go, Tequila und Who do you love, plus einem spontan eingebauten Sex machine, nachdem jemand eine Unterhose in Richtung Dickie Bucket geworfen hatte. Danny Thompson hatte ein knalliges Bass-Solo wie einst Bill Black. Dave Pegg, obwohl Organisator des Ganzen, wollte auch Spaß haben und kam für eine wunderbare Version von Johnny Cash's Get rhythm und Boat out to the sea, gekleidet in Shorts und Cropredy 2003 T-Shirt, hinzu. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt war Harry Lime Theme aus dem "Dritten Mann". Den Abschluß bildete Elvis Presley's Little sister. Aber sie durften natürlich noch nicht gehen. Helen Watson und Jacqui Mc Shee mußten noch ihren Auftritt haben und twisteten in bester Laune zu See you later alligator.  Dave Pegg an der Gitarre !!! Der Spaß schien unendlich groß, denn sie fanden ewig lang kein Ende. Jeder, der Spaß am guten alten Rock'n Roll, gespielt von echten Virtuosen, hat, sollte sich die Bucket Boys mal live ansehen.  A performance full of fun was delivered by the Bucket Boys who followed. Although recruting ex-members of Sutherland Brothers & Quivers their set was a revival of good old Rock'n Roll and classic Guitar Rock. Their great guitarist Tim Renwick had turned 51 the day before. Some Cropredy regulars felt being in the mood to join the Bucket Boys in order to jam along. There was a delightful medley based on Elvis Presley's Guitar man,  and it was pure guitar fun driven along by some skillfull train rhythm.
Ralph Mc Tell and Danny Thompson joined in. Ralph sang 2 songs, one of them being Woody Guthrie's DoReMi. A Rockabilly style medley followed, including Don't let go, Tequila and Who do you love, plus a very spontaneous excerpfrom Sex machine, after someone had thrown an underpant to Dickie Bucket. Danny Thompson came up with Bill Black double bass solo. Dave Pegg, in spite of being the organizer of all this, wanted to have fun as well and came on stag in shorts and wearing a Cropredy 2003 T-shirt playing bass on a wonderful version of Johnny Cash's Get rhythm  and Boat out to the sea. Another fine piece of music by the Buckets was the Harry Lime Theme  out of "The Third Man". The set was finished with Elvis Presley's Little sister. But they werent allowed to go, of course. Helen Watson and Jacqui Mc Shee had to have their performance jiving along to See you later alligator. Mr. Pegg on guitar !!! It was an almost neverending piece of fun.They just didn't want to stop. Anyone who likes good old Rock'n Roll, played by some skillfull musicians, should go out and see the Bucket Boys.

Gutes Songmaterial war garantiert, als Blue Tapestry, auch wieder so eine Art Supergroup, auf die Bühne kamen. Julie Matthews spielte die Rolle von Carole King, und Chris While jene von Joni Mitchell. Begleitet wurden sie von einer hochkarätigen Band, nämlich Martin Allcock, Pete Zorn und Neil Marshall. Vor ihrem Cropredy-Auftritt hatten sie bereits zwei erfolgreiche Tourneen hinter sich. "Maart" erschien im knallroten Anzug mit gelbem Hemd. Er spielte hauptsächlich Bass, und wenn er zu einem seiner genialen Gitarrensoli ansetzte, griff Allroundmusiker Pete Zorn zum Tieftöner. Sie eröffneten den Auftritt gleich mit zwei Höhepunkten, I feel the earth move und It's too late.  Es folgte eine der genialsten Kompositionen von Joni Mitchell, Coyote. Chris While griff zur E-Gitarre. Bei This time next time intonierte Pete Zorn ein wunderschönes Solo auf der Querflöte. Allgemeines Mitgrooven war angesagt, als sie I'm into something good spielten, einen Song der "Brill Building Pop Ära" Anfang der 60'er Jahre, als das Duo Goffin / King Hits am Fließband produzierte. Es war 1964 der allererste große Hit für Herman'sHermits. Gesangliches Highlight für mich persönlich war Chris Whiles Vortrag von (You make me feel like) A natural woman, ebenfalls aus der Feder von Goffin / King und 1967 ein großer Erfolg für Aretha Franklin. Assistentin war übrigens Tochter Kellie While, die immer parat stand, um ihrer Mutter das richtige Instrument zu reichen. Eines davon war ein Dulcimer, den Chris While in Case of you  einsetzte, übrigens Julie Matthews' Lieblingssong aus dem Repertoire von Joni Mitchell. Promimenter Gast bei Raised on robbery  war Dave Pegg am Bass. Ergreifend war ihre sehr langsame Version des alten Klassikers Woodstock,  zu dem "Maart" ein wunderbares langes Gitarrensolo beisteuerte. Als es dem Ende des Auftritts entgegenging bauten sie in ein Lied ein paar Zeilen für die hervorragende Arbeit leistende Soundcrew ein. Sie beendeten den Auftritt mit Big yellow taxi  und You've got a friend,  und man sah doch die eine oder andere Freudenträne fließen, wenn man sich so umschaute.

A choice of good songs was guaranteed when Blue Tapestry came on stage, Julie Matthews playing the role of Carole King, Chris While that one of Joni Mitchell. And they were backed by a supergroup of Martin Allcock, Pete Zorn and Neil Marshall. "Maart" came up with a red suit and yellow shirt. He played a lot of bass, and when he started one of his great guitar solos multi-instrumentalist Pete Zorn played the deep notes. The highlights came very soon, because they opened the set with I feel the earth move and It's too late. One of the great Joni Mitchell songs, Coyote  followed, Chris While on electric guitar. On This time next time  Pete Zorn played a wonderful flute solo. The Cropredy crowds were grooving along when they did I'm into something good,  a song out of the "Brill Building Pop Era" at the beginning of the 60's, when Goffin / King wrote hit after hit, this one being the first ever chart success for Herman's Hermits. Vocal highlight for me personally was Chris While's reading of (You make me feel like) A natural woman, also a Goffin / King composition, and a big hit for Aretha Franklin in 1967. Chris While was assisted by her daughter Kellie While who cared for her mother's instruments. One of the instruments being a dulcimer which her mother played on Case of you, Julie Matthews' favourite Joni Mitchell song by the way. Guesting on bass was Dave Pegg for Raised on robbery. A very slow version of  the old classic Woodstock was really moving, and "Maart" had a marvellous and extensive guitar solo. When the gig came close to the end they added some extra lyrics to a song saying "thank you" to the wonderful sound crew. The set finished with Big yellow taxi  and You've got a friend,  and parts of the audience had some tears of joy in their eyes.

Der Auftritt von Blue Tapestry hatte nur ein einziges Manko. Es gab keine Zugabe. Die Bühne mußte für Procol Harum vorbereitet werden. Die Stimmung war irgendwie feierlich in den letzten Minute, bevor sie auftraten. Links stand majestätisch der Flügel für Gary Brooker, rechts die Hammondfür Matthew Fisher.
Leider war die Erlaubnis zum Fotografieren zeitlich sehr eingeschränkt, und Blitzlicht war verboten, sodaß meine Bilder aus dem Publikum heraus gemacht werden mussten.

There was only one negative aspect to Blue Tapestry's set. They weren't allowed to do an encore. Stage had to be prepared for Procol Harum. A kind of solemn atmosphere was felt by many, when it was just a few minutes before they went on. On the left side of the stage they had placed Gary Brooker's majestic grand piano, Matthew Fisher's hammond standing on the opposite side. Unfortunately, access for photographing was very restricted (and no flashlights were allowed), so that I had to take my pictures out of the audience.

Procol Harum trumpften mit all ihren großen Klassikern auf, und auch das neue Material fiel qualitätsmäßig nicht ab. Der Sound und die Songs  waren großartig, aber irgendwie hatte man das Gefühl, daß mehr Routine als Emotion im Spiel war. Matthew Fisher und Geoff Whitehorn waren die einzigen, die bisweilen aus sich herausgingen. Höhepunkte waren eine tolle Version von Whisky train, mit langem Blues-Intro und das schlicht und ergreifend geniale A whiter shade of pale.

 Procol Harum delivered all the classics, and the new songs fit perfectly. The sound was superb, but I found the performance wasn't very emotional, Matthew Fisher and Geoff Whitehorn being the exception in a few moments. Highlights to me were a great Whisky train,  featuring an extensive Blues-Intro, and their all-time ingenious A whiter shade of pale.

Dritter Tag, Samstag, 09.08.2003 / Third day, saturday, August 9th, 2003

In Banbury auf dem Markt ging ich mir noch mal ein paar Shorts kaufen, da das Wetter wieder sehr heiß zu werden versprach. Ich kaufte mir einen "Guardian" und begann bei einem Cappuccino darin zu lesen. Irgendwie kam mir aber alles bekannt vor, und ich stellte fest, daß es die Donnerstagsausgabe war. Als ich in dem Zeitungsladen reklamierte, wurde ich aufgeklärt, es gäbe den "Guardian" sowohl als Wochen-, als auch als Tageszeitung. Das Programm in Cropredy begann mit Richard Digance, und alle fanden es amüsant, als er Singin' in the rain vortrug.

Went to Banbury in the morning to buy a new pair of shorts (for the weather). I had a cappuccino and began reading the "Guardian", but after while the words seemed familiar to me (not just the words, but also in which order they were). I realized that I had got the thursday issue and went back to the shop. The lady informed me, that there were two different "Guardians", one coming out daily, the other weekly. The programme at Cropredy day 3 started with Richard Digance, and everybody had a big laugh when he was Singin' in the rain.

Für jemanden, dessen Muttersprache nicht Englisch ist, macht es natürlich eine hohe Konzentration erforderlich, will man zumindest einen Teil des Witzes verstehen können. Wir hörten beispielsweise "Johann Sebastian Bach's First Movement for four months". Richard Digance versteht es sehr gut, das Publikum bei Laune zu halten, und er bezieht es auch ins Konzert mit ein, unter anderem auch wieder in seiner Version von Local  Hero,  bei dem Cropredy Möwengeschrei und Meeresrauschen imitieren musste. Ein eher seriöser Beitrag war das mir gut im Gedächtnis gebliebene Time moves on,  ein Lied über den Ort, an dem man aufgewachsen ist, und wo sich mittlerweile alles verändert hat.

 Someone like me, whose native language is not English, has to be very concentrated to understand at least parts the witness. We got hear  Johann Seabstian Bach's First Movement for four months  for example. Richard Digance kept the audience in good spirit for his whole set and involved it as well. For Local hero  like last year they had to do the seagulls and sea breeze sound again . A fine song that I kept in mind was Time moves on, about the place where you've been born, and where everything has changed meanwhile.

Meanwhile down by the river

Ansager Bob Fox warnte die Leute vor den Gefahren durch Alkoholgenusss bei der herrschenden Hitze und empfahl auch entsprechenden Sonnenschutz. Der Arzt eines Kumpels habe diesem bei Sonnenbrand Viagra empfohlen. Es helfe zwar nicht gegen den Sonnenbrand, aber es halte die Bettdecke davon ab, mit dem Sonnenbrand in Berührung zu kommen.

Compere Bob Fox announced it would be dangerous to drink large amounts of alcohol under the circumstances (the big heat) and he recommended the people to protect their skin from sunburn. He said a friend's doctor had adviced him to take viagra. It wouldn't help with the sunburn, but it would keep the sheet from getting in touch with the sunburn.

Um 13.30 Uhr traten Big Al Hodge & The Mechanics auf die Bühne, und sie waren, zumindest für mich, eine große Überraschung. Ich hatte zwar gelesen, daß sie im Hintergrund durchaus einen Namen haben, und auch schon füer sehr bekannte Leute, wie Leo Sayer, gespielt hatten. gehört aber hatte ich noch kein einziges Stück von ihnen. A NEW DAY RECORDS, ihre Plattenfirma, filmte den gesamten Auftritt.

 Sie spielten einen herrlichen, schwerblütigen Blues-Rock, gespickt mit wunderbaren gekonnten Soli.
Al Hodges Stimme hat eine frappante Ähnlichkeit mit der von John Hiatt, und Gitarrist Jo Partridge sieht wie der zwillingsbruder von Steve Miller aus. Neben viel ansprechendem eigenen Material spielten sie auch bemerkenswerte Covers, unter anderem eine sehr harte Version von Hey Joe und das stilistisch gänzlich unterschiedliche Ain't that peculiar. Als Zugabe zum Mitschnippen hörten wir  "your love keeps liftin' me higher and higher".

At 13.30 Big Al Hodge & The Mechanics came on stage, and they really were a big surprise. To me at least. I had heard they were names in the background having played for famous people like Leo Sayer, but I had never heard any record of them. A NEW DAY RECORDS, their company, filmed the whole set. They played a wonderful sort of heavy Blues Rock with some fine and skillful solos. Al Hodge's voice reminds me to John Hiatt a bit, and guitarist Jo Partridge looks like Steve Miller's twin brother.

Besides many great original stuff they also came up with some interesting covers, like a very heavy version of Hey Joe and a stylistically very different Ain't that peculiar. Their encore was a fingersnippin' song to sing along to "your love keeps liftin' me higher and higher".

Als unangekündigte Überraschung traten dann Massini aus Südafrika auf. Ungewohnte Gesänge, begleitet auf einer Umjupe (einer Art Flitzebogen) und Perkussion sorgten für eine unerwartete kulturelle Bereicherung von Cropredy 2003.

Next were Massini from South Africa who hadn't been announced in the programme. Accompanied by umjupe and percussion we heard some unfamiliar singing - another cultural enrichment of Cropredy 2003.

Bob Fox, außerdem Cropredy-Moderator an diesem Tag, trat anschließend mit seiner Formation The Hush auf die Bühne, und sie spielten einen tollen Set. Großartiger instrumentaler Höhepunkt dieser Band ist Ex-Hedgehog Pie Gitarrist Jed Grimes. Sie begannen ihren Set mit Jack Crawford und ließen natürlich den Großteil ihres aktuellen Albums folgen. Ein durch und durch tolles Folkrock-Konzert !

Symptomatisch dafür, wie schnell Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes spielten, ist die Tatsache, daß es schwierig war, scharfe Bilder zu schießen. Erst die sechste Nummer, Hoyt Axtons Evangelina, wurde mit "We're gonna slow down a bit" angekündigt.Zuvor hatte man kaum stillstehen stehen: I'm ready als Einstieg, dann Little Feats Let it roll, Rock around with Ollie Vee, Take your time von Buddy Holly und Carl Perkins' I'm restless. Dem langsamen Stück folgte dafür in noch einmal verdoppelter Geschwindigkeit der Klassiker Tiger Rag, ehe ein von Tastenheld Pete Wingfield gespieltes Piano-Instrumental von Floyd Cramer drankam.

Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes played so fast it was almost impossible to make sharp pictures. Not before the sixth number, Hoyt Axton's Evangelina, he announced "We'regonna slow down a bit". Before that they had speeded along to I'm ready (opener), Little Feat's Let it roll, Rock around with Ollie Vee, Take your time von Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins' I'm restless. But they speeded up even more when the classic Tiger Rag followed. Keyboard hero Pete Wingfield came up with a piano instrumental of Floyd Cramer.

Danach setzte sich Albert Lee, der 2002 einen Grammy gewonnen hatte, selbst ans Klavier, um Jimmy Webb's Highwayman vorzutragen. Drummer Peter Baron sang Country comfort, und die Abschlußnummern One way rider, Singin' the Blues, Country boy (nicht wie von "Forever Young" orakelt, zusammen mit Jerry Donahue) und eine Zugabe ließen das Blut auf hoher Temperatur zurück. Simon Nicol beklagte sich später direkt vor Fairports Auftreten, Albert Lee habe alle Noten gespielt und für sie nichts mehr übrig gelassen.

Albert Lee (who had been awarded a grammy in 2002) himself played piano to Jimmy Webb's Highwayman. Country comfort was sung by drummer Peter Baron. The final pieces being One way rider, Singin' the Blues, Country boy (unfortunately without Jerry Donahue like "Forever Young" had wished) and one encore kept your blood pressure high. Simon Nicol later argued Albert Lee had played all the notes and wouldn't have left one for Fairport to play.

In der nun folgenden Pause wurde die Bühne für Fairport Convention präpariert. Mit dabei war "Forever Young's langjähriger guter Freund Paul Smith, der für die Instrumente von Chris Leslie zuständig war. Hochkonzentriert, wie man sieht, verrichtete er seine Arbeit.

Stage was prepared for Fairport Convention after that. Amongst the people busy on stage was "Forever Young's" longtime friend Paul Smith being responsible for Chris Leslie's instruments for the week. He was doing his work highly concentrated as you can see.

Dann kam Dennis Locorriere, und man war wirklich gespannt, was dieser Mann ganz allein auf der Bühne zustande bringen würde. Er stieg ein mit Wonderful Soup Song, und alle merkten vom ersten Moment an, daß dieser Musiker unter Strom steht. Er gab alles, um die Leute zu unterhalten. Er erzählte, Dr. Hook hätten mal einen Welthit gehabt, der einzig und allein in den USA mißachtet worden wäre, weil die Amis den Text als zu "dirty" angesehen hätten.  Der Songtitel entfällt mir leider im Moment, aber eine Textzeile lautet "I'm gonna love you a little bit more". Dennis Locorriere brachte natürlich auch Sylvia's mother und The cover of the Rolling Stone, als Zugabe Freaker's ball. Er war am Ende durch und durch nass geschwitzt. Er hat alles gegeben und erntete dankbaren Beifall.

Then came Dennis Locorriere, and everybody was looking forward to experience what this man would perform alone on a stage. He opened with Wonderful soup song, and there was no doubt from the first minute on that he would give his everything to entertain the crowd. He told a story that once Dr. Hook had had a worldwide hit that was being banned in the US, being regarded as "dirty". I don't remember the actual song title, but one of the lyric lines says:  "I'm gonna love you a little bit more". Of course, Sylvia's mother and The cover of the Rolling Stone were included into the set, and as an encore he performed Freaker's ball. Dennis Locorriere was sweatened totally wet at the end, and he earned his rousing applause really.

Ric Sanders gab öffentlich den Heiratsantrag eines gewissen Jeff an Heather bekannt. Die Dame sagte "Ja", und Ric kommentierte "Take it away, Jeff !"

Dann konnte es Gerry Conway kaum erwarten, den Woodworm Swing zu spielen, gefolgt von The crowd und The happy man,
welches den Bewohnern von Adderbury gewidmet wurde.

In Adderbury gibt es 4 Pubs und 2 Morris Dance Teams, wie wir erfuhren. Es kam das so genannte "loose windscreen waving" zur Sprache, und Dave Pegg reinterpretierte es als "Bruce Springsteen waving".

Für weitere Abwechslung sorgten die in Cropredy schon zur Institution gewordenen Tom Connelly Dancers. Chris Leslie spielte, nur von Perkussion begleitet, Flöte. Das Lark In The Morning Medley begann mit einem furiosen Solo von Dave Pegg. Zuletzt selten live vorgetragen wurde das nun folgende Rosemary's Sister, brilliant vocal by Simon Nicol. Bei Chasing The Dragon, einer neuen Nummer (aber auf der Winter Tour bereits vorgestellt), stieg Andy Guttridge mit ein.

"Forever Young" saß in der erste Reihe. Die Fans waren hier der Star. Woran die beiden auf dem unteren Bild wohl gerade denken?

Another variety to the set were the Tom Connelly Dancers. Chris Leslie played flute, accompanied only by percussion. The Lark In The Morning Medley was introduced by a fabulous Dave Pegg solo.  Rarely performed live has been Rosemary's Sister which followed, beautifully sung by Simon Nicol. For Chasing The Dragon, a new number (introduced at the winter tour before), Andy Guttridge joined the Fairports.

Canny Capers widmeten die Fairports Rob Braviner, ihrem Soundmann und Tourmanager.  Ein weiteres neues Instrumental, sowie das ebenfalls neue The Fossil Hunting folgten. Steve Gibbons und P.J. Wright kamen auf die Bühne, und sie brachten ein wunderbares Dark Eyes.
 Canny Cappers, which followed, was dedicated to soundman and tour manager Rob Braviner. Next were a new instrumental and The Fossil Hunting. Steve Gibbons and P.J. Wright for a wonderful Dark Eyes.

Von Simon Nicol würdig begrüßt wurden dann Dave Swarbrick und Martin Carthy, die dann begleitet von Dave Pegg zu dritt in die "Babbacombe Lee"-Ära zurückreisten und Sailor's alphabet vortrugen.
Honourably announced by Simon Nicol on stage came Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy. Accompanied by Dave Pegg they travelled back into the times of "Babbacombe Lee" and played a wonderful Sailor's alphabet.

Weitere Gäste folgten in Person von Kevin Dempsey, Mike und Meg Burnham, sowie Maartin Allcock. Es stand nun, inklusive der Geiger Swarbrick/Leslie/Sanders eine Art CROPREDY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA auf der Bühne. Sie spielten ein Medley aus Crazy man Michael, White dress und Rosie. Swarbrick persönlich kündigte dann Beryl Marriott an. Sie gab die gemachten Komplimente zurück und sagte:  "ohne ihn stünden wir heute nicht hier". Anschließend trugen die aktuellen Fairport The heart of the song und Wood and the wire vor.
More guests followed - Kevin Dempsey, Mike & Meg Burnham, Maartin Allcock, all together with Swarbrick/Leslie/Sanders being a kind of CROPREDY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. They played a medley of Crazy man Michael, White dress and Rosie. Swarbrick himself gave a welcome to Beryl Marriott then. She said:  "without him we wouldn't be here tonight". Today's Fairport played
The heart of the song and Wood and the wire after that.

Es folgte das Stück über den "Scheissfresser", A surfeit of lampreys, mit Maartin Allcock an der Leadgitarre, leider ohne das phänomenale Bass-Solo von Dave Pegg. Simon Nicol kündigte an, daß man Richard Thompson auch gebucht habe - in einer Kabine unter der Tower Bridge. Dann kam ein herrliches schnelles Instrumental namens The seven kings, gespielt unter Mithilfe von
John Kirkpatrick, Kevin Dempsey und Dave Swarbrick. Swarbrick und Dempsey spielten dann in Erinnerung an Swarb's einstige Wahlheimat My heart's in New South Wales. Beryl Marriott kam zurück für eine weitere Nummer. Letzter Gast vor dem Finale war Jacqui Mc Shee. Jetzt waren die Fairporter wieder allein auf der Bühne. Sie brachten das selten gespielte Western wind - aus dem Norden, wo die Fairporter nicht sehr beliebt seien, wie Simon Nicol erwähnte. Who knows where the time goes kam als wunderbares Duett, gesungen von Simon und Chris While. Nachdem sie John Gaudie,Widow of Westmoreland und Journeyman's grace (mit einem Gitarrensolo von Simon Nicol) gespielt hatten, bemerkte Dave Pegg, es sei noch Zeit für einen Publikumswunsch. Es wurde lautstark Rosie gefordert, und Chris Leslie sang es wirklich wundervoll, begleitet von den Stimmen Chris Whiles und Julie Matthews'.

Followed A surfeit of lampreys with Maartin Allcock playing lead guitar, unfortunately without Dave Pegg's great bass solo.
Simon Nicol said they had booked Richard Thompson as well - in a cabin below Tower Bridge. Together with John Kirkpatrick,
Kevin Dempsey and Dave Swarbrick they played a wonderful instrumental called The seven kings. Swarbrick and Dempsey then performed My heart's in New South Wales. Beryl Marriott came back for another number. Jacqui Mc Shee was singing a song before the end started to begin. Fairport was left alone on stage now. The played the rarely performed Western wind from the north where Fairport is not very popular, as Simon Nicol claimed. Who knows where the time goes was a wonderful duet by Simon and Chris While.
John Gaudie, Widow of Westmoreland and Journeyman's grace (including a solo by Simon Nicol) were finished and Dave Pegg realized there was time for a request. Many people shouted for Rosie, and Chris Leslie sang it in a moving manner, backing vocals provided by Chris While and Julie Matthews.

Als dann eingeleitet von einem romantischen Gitarrenarpeggio Matty Groves angestimmt wurde, wußte man, es war Zeit, Pläne für das nächste Cropredy zu schmieden. denn Cropredy 2003 ging jetzt zu Ende. Das Arrangement, insbesondere des angehängten Dirty linen, war wieder einmal genial abgewandelt. Ein furioses Finale des Hauptsets. Unvermeidlich natürlich dann Meet on the ledge. "Forever Young" hatte erstmals die Ehre, den Schluß direkt vor der Bühne mitzuerleben. Ergreifend, wirklich ergreifend. Kellie While war eine Stunde vorher gefragt worden, ob sie die erste Strophe singen wolle und mußte noch ganz schnell den Text lernen. Den abgebildeten Trompeter engagierten die Fairporter, nachdem er während Fairports erstmaligem Auftritt beim Cambridge Folk Festival Meet on the ledge begleitet hatte.

When Simon Nicol opened Matty Groves with a romantic guitar arpeggio everybody knew it was time to make plans for next year's Cropredy. Cropredy 2003 was coming to an end. Again Fairport came up with a totally new arrangement, especially for Dirty linen which was a furious climax to the main set. With no doubt then came Meet on the ledge, "Forever Young" being honoured for the first time by experiencing it in front of the stage. It was moving, really moving !!! Kellie While had been asked an hour before to sing the first verse and had to learn the lyrics very quickly. The trumpeter had accompanied Meet on the ledge when Fairport first played Cambridge Folk Festival in 2003, and they booked him for Cropredy immediately.

Direkt nach dem Ende stellte mir Ashley Hutchings, der bei MOTL mitgesungen hatte, seinen 11-jährigen Sohn vor. Ich fragte diesen, ob er auch schon Bass spiele. Er sagte "Nein", er spiele Gitarre. Dann wollte er von seinem Vater wissen, warum denn das XXXVI-Zeichen an der Bühnenrückwand (übrigens handgemalt von Tom Leary) abgebildet sei, und der "Guvernor" antwortete vielsagend: "It's our 36th anniversary".  Das "our" fand ich äußerst bemerkenswert.

Right after the final song I met Ashley Hutchings who had been singing backing vocals for MOTL, and he introduced his 11-year-old son to me.
I asked him if he would play the bass like his father. He said no, but he were a guitar player. Then he asked his father why there was a XXXVI sign at the background of the stage  (handpainted byTom Leary by the way). The "guvernor" answered:"It's our 36th anniversary", and I find it quite remarkable that he used the term "our".

Das Publikum war wieder einmal großartig, außer der eine Typ, der während des ganzen Fairport-Auftritts ständig laut nach "Hen's march" rief.

Cropredy audience was great again, except the one bastard who shouted for "Hen's march" for the whole Fairport set.
