Tickled Pink

Energiegeladene englische Dance Music, bei der niemand stillsitzen kann. Zur Besetzung gehörte Cropredy Moderator Simon Care.
Als sehr guter Gitarrist fiel mir Mark Hutchinson, ehemals Rainbow Chasers, auf. Einer der besten Folkrock-Drummer
ist sicherlich Ex-Clarion Guy Fletcher. Zum Repertoire gehörten sehr viele Traditionals, und auch schöne Interpretationen
von "Black leg miner" und Thompsons "Wall of death".

Energetic English dance music that had many of you on your feet. Tickled Pink featured Cropredy stage manager Simon Care on melodeon.
Mark Hutchinson, formerly Rainbow Chasers, is a great guitarist, and Guy Fletcher, ex-Clarion, surely one of the best Folkrock
drummers. Tickled Pink played a lot of traditionals. I remember "Black leg miner" and Thompson's "Wall of death" as highlights
of their gig.

Hilary James and Simon Mayor

Ehemalige Mandolin All Stars (Mitte der 90'er), zu denen auch Maartin Allcock und Chris Leslie gehörten. Die beiden bestritten das Vorprogramm
der diesjährigen Wintertour Fairports. Wie auch schon bei Tickled Pink machte Paul Smith hier den Sound. Leider mußte man
wegen der akustischen Musik nach vorne zur Bühne gehen, um die überragende Qualität der Musik richtig zu erleben. Was für ein Anblick
das ist, wenn Hilary James den Mandoline-Bass spielt. Leider keine Fotos.

Mandolin virtuosi and talented multi-instrumentalists, Simon and Hilary performed a beguiling mix of songs and tunes. The couple had been part
of the Mandolin All Stars about 10 years ago. As with Tickled Pink Paul Smith did the sound here. Unfortunately because of their acoustic set
you had to go front stage to experience the high quality of their set. And what a sight it is when Hilary James plays the mandolin
double-bass. Unfortunately no photographs.

Jah Wobble's English Roots Band

Der Observer nannte ihn einen "talentierten Einzelkämpfer, das Bass spielende Equivalent zu Clint Eastwoods Gunslinger".
Berühmt wurde Jah Wobble vor allem durch Public Image Limited. In Cropredy fand ich ihn wenig beeindruckend.
Sicherlich war das eine sehr kompetent gespielte Art World Music (im Dub Sound), und auch die Sängerin Liz Carter konnte
überzeugen, wenn aber der Chef die ganze Zeit auf dem Stuhl sitzt und dreinschaut, als sei es eine Höchsstrafe, auf dieser
Bühne spielen zu müssen, dann komme ich zu dem Schluß, lieber eine Band zu hören, die ab und zu die Noten nicht richtig trifft,
dafür aber Spaß hat. Jah Wobble hatte offensichtlich keinen. Ich auch nicht.

"A maverick talent, the bass-toting equivalent of Clint Eastwood's gunslinger" as The Observer put it, Jah Wobble shot to fame with
Public Image Limited. His Cropredy set although didn't impress me. Of course they are accomplished musicians, playing a kind of
World Music (mostly in a Dub sound), and singer Liz Carter is very good. But Mr. Wobble was sitting on a chair his face giving me
the impression that it was a punishment to him being forced to play on this stage. I prefer a band who fails the correct notes
occasionally but has fun. Jah Wobble didn't, and so was I.

Warten auf Country Joe - Waiting for Country Joe

Country Joe ist ein großartiger Musiker und Entertainer. Cropredy war, neben einigen Festivals, eine der wenigen Gelegenheiten,
den Kalifornier außerhalb der USA live zu erleben. Debbie Roeder aus den USA, seit Jahren die beliebte Masseurin, erzählte,
Country Joe sei ihr bis dato entspanntester und gelockertster Patient gewesen. Der Set war von angenehmen Sixties Feeling
geprägt. Meine persönlichen Höhepunkte waren "Rock'n Roll again" und eine zehnminütige Fassung von "For what it's worth".

Country Joe is a great musician and entertainer. This was a rare chance to see this legendary Californian
bandleader and songwriter in the UK.  Debbie Roeder from the US, having been welcome massageist at Cropredy for many years, said that
Country Joe Mc Donald was her most relaxed customer ever treated. Their set had a welcome Sixties feeling. My personal
best were "Rock'n Roll again" and a 10 minute version of "For what it's worth".

Edwina Hayes

Edwina Hayes ist eine talentierte junge Songschreiberin mit einer sehr schönen Stimme und großartiger Bühnenpräsenz.
Mir fiel insbesondere eine sehr schöne Version von "Lakes Of Pontchartrain" auf.

Talented young singer-songwriter Edwina Hayes has a beautiful voice and great stage presence. I especially remember
her fine reading of "Lakes of Pontchartrain".

Chris While & Julie Matthews

Seit Jahren bieten uns diese Cropredy-Lieblinge einen einzigartigen Mix aus hoher Musikalität, engelsgleichen Stimmen und
großartigen Songs aus eigener und fremder Feder. Für "Head-smashed-in-Buffalo-Jump" gastierte Chris Leslie.
Cropredy favourites Chris While and Julie Mathews gave us their unique blend of superb musicianship,
singing like angels and great self-penned songs as well as some other stuff. For "Head-smashed-in-Buffalo-jump" they
were joined by Chris Leslie.

The Muffin Men with Jimmy Carl Black

Jimmy Carl Black war der Originalschlagzeuger der Mothers Of Invention 1966, agierte in Cropredy aber als Sänger.
Die Muffin Men boten eine Funken sprühende Mischung aus Zappa- und Captain Beefheart-Material auf höchstem musikalischen Niveau.
Zu ihrem jazzigen Programm gehörten "My guitar likes to kill you mama", "Willie the pimp" und ein großartiges "Zoot Allures".

Featuring Jimmy Carl Black (formerly with The Mothers Of Invention), The Muffin Men played scintillating arrangements
of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart material on a musically very high level. Black only acted as a singer and didn't drum.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Laut Ankündigung durften wir tolle Musik mit "Brio" (?) erwarten - und weit und breit kein einziges Banjo. Nun denn: ich weiß nicht, was
"brio" bedeutet, aber die Ukuleles waren großartig. Sechs Ukulelen und eine akustische Bassgitarre.

The Ukulele Orchestra were expected to be playing great music performed with brio – and not a banjo in sight!
Well, I don't know what "brio" means, but the Ukuleles were absolutely great. 6 ukuleles plus acoustic bass guitar.

Schon als ich mich von Backstage der Bühne näherte und den alten Hawkwind-Hit "Silver machine" vernahm,
war der Humor dieser Leute spürbar, bevor ich die witzige Mimik dann noch als zusätzlichen Launemacher sehen
konnte.

Even before I had seen their mimicry as an additional entertainment I could feel their humour when I approached
the photographer's pitch from backstage hearing them play the old Hawkind hit "Silver machine".

Fast alles, was sie spielten hielt man in einem solchen instrumentalen Umfeld bisher für unmöglich. Wie sie David Bowie
imitierten, als sie "Life on mars" spielten - ein absoluter Lacher. Und wer hätte gedacht, daß er jemals ein Medley von
"Orange blossom special", "In a gadda da vida" und "Smoke on the water" würde zu gehöre bekommen?

Almost everything they played would not have been expected to be done with such instruments. When they mimed David Bowie
with their reading of "Life on mars" everybody's laugh was guaranteed. And who would have thought he would ever be able to listen
to a medley of "Orange blossom special", "In a gadda da vida" and "Smoke on the water" ?

Der instrumentale Außenseiter - Instrumentally an outsider

Andere Beispiele aus dem Repertoire der Ukuleles an diesem Tag: die Filmmusik aus "The good, the bad and the ugly",
"It's such a perfect day" und, kaum zu glauben, eine witzige Version von "Matty Groves", möglicherweise extra für dieses
Ereignis eingeübt. Außerdem "Kiss" von Prince mit Scatgesang, "Psycho killer" von den talking Heads, eine swingversion von
Kate Bushs "Wuthering heights", Status Quos "Sweet Caroline", angesagt als "originally Latin, then transfered by an
Italian named Francesco Rossi", "Le Freak", und als Zugaben "Willin'" von Little Feat und das tausendfach mitgesungene
"God gave Rock'n Roll to you". Manchmal schauten sie sich gegenseitig, als wollten sie sagen: "Was macht denn der (die) jetzt schon wieder?"
An zwei witzige Ansagen erinnere ich mich auch noch:
"Das nächste Stück handelt vom Plagieren, und das war nicht unsere Idee"
"Auf einer Streichholzschachtel las ich 'Von Kindern fern halten'. Ich meine, ich weiß, sie machen Lärm und so
weiter, aber ..."

Sogar die Sonne mußte lachen. Dabei stand als nächstes Richard Thompson auf dem Programm.

Other examples of The Ukulele's repertoire on this day:  soundtrack of "The good, the bad and the ugly", "It's such a perfect day",
and a funny version of ... you wouldn't believe it ... "Matty Groves", probably especially rehearsed for this event. They also played
"Kiss" (Prince), the Talking Head's "Psycho killer", a Swing version of Kate Bush's "Wuthering heights", Status Quo's "Sweet Caroline",
announced as "originally Latin, then transfered by an Italian named Francesco Rossi", "Le freak" and Little Feat's "Willin'" as well
as "God gave Rock'n Roll to you" (the crowd singing along) as encores.
Sometimes they looked at each other as if they wanted to ask "What the hell is he (she) doing now?".
Two funny quotes I remember as well:
"The next one is about plagiarism, and it wasn't our idea"
"On a matchbox I've read 'Keep away from children'. I mean, I know they're noisy and so on, but ..."

Even the sun was caused to laugh. And Richard Thompson was on next.

Mit teilweise blauem Abendhimmel im Hintergrund begann die Thompson Twins ihren Set mit "One door opens"
aus "The Old Kit Bag". Neben den bekannten Songs wie "Mingus eyes", "Crawl back" und "Al Bowlly" wurden
viele Stücke der neuen CD "Front Parlour Games" gespielt (Besprechung folgt). Als sechste Nummer kam ein für
Thompson ungewohnter Blues mit den Textzeilen "I know a girl in satin, she talks dirty in latin ... I got the hots for the smarts".
Weiß jemand, wie diese Nummer heißt ?
Clive Bunker und ich sangen synchron mit: "I got the Cropredy Blues", was natürlich gelogen war.
Uns allen ging's blendend.

Friendly sky above the Thompson Twins started the set with "One door opens" from "The Old Kit Bag". Besides well known
numbers like "Mingus eyes", "Crawl back" and "Al Bowlly" many songs from the new album "Front Parlour Games"
(review will follow soon) were played. Their sixth number was a Blues, rarely done by Richard Thompson.
"I know a girl in satin, she talks dirty in latin ... I got the hots for the smarts". Does anybody know what the song title is?
Me and Clive Bunker were singing along:  "I got the Cropredy Blues", a lie obviously.
We were in the best mood you can imagine.

Am Ende kamen natürlich auch die "Hits":  "Misunderstood", "Jimmy Shands", "Feel so good" und "Wall of death". Für letzteres und
"A heart needs a home" stieg Christine Collister mit ein. Den Abschluß bildeten "Razor dance" und "Ghosts in the wind"
Ein tolles Konzert ! Übrigens: eine lobende Erwähnung der Ukuleles hatte Thompson auch parat.

joined them, as well as for "A heart needs a home". The set ended with "Razor dance" and "Ghosts in the wind". Great concert !

The Dylan Project

Das Dylan Project schloß den Freitag ab und war einfach nur großartig. Rockig wie nie zuvor, mit viel Spielraum
für P.J. Wrights Gitarrensoli. Der Mitsinger war natürlich "Rain day women" - "everybody must get stoned !"
Walter aus Glems bemerkte, bei einigen Stücken habe er gar nicht gewußt, daß er von Dylan stamme.

Great end for this friday. Rockier than ever the Dylan Project gave P.J. Wright space enough for lots of solos.
Singalong favourite, of course was "Rainy day women" - "everybody must get stoned". My friend Walter mentioned
there were a few songs he didn't even know it was a Dylan song.

Meanwhile on the caravan site - Fred Baker, wife Birgit and son Elliott

T & Latouche

T Carthy und Glen Latouche, die charismatischen Ex-Frontmänner von Edward II, kamen mit einer vom Roots Reggae bestimmten Band
mit tollen Gesangsharmonien und Gänsehaut erzeugendem Bläsersatz. Neben eigenen Stücken brachten sie auch Klassiker wie "Jammin'".
Unwiderstehlich ist der Groove der Bassfiguren von T. Carthy. Bei dieser gutgelaunten Musik Musik hatte man wenigstens die Illusion
schönen Wetters. Es regnete mittlerweile nämlich in Strömen.

Featuring T Carthy and Glen Latouche (the charismatic ex-frontmen of reggae-folk fusion Edward II), this band featured
roots-reggae grooves, great harmonies and blistering brass. They played own songs as well as classics like "Jammin'".
All driven along by T. Carthy's wonderful bass grooves. This happy music at least gave us the illusion of good weather.
Because meanwhile it was raining cats and dogs.

Uiscedwr

Uiscedwr (das gälische Wort für "Wasser", ausgesprochen "ish-kadooeer"), ein Trio aus Manchester, das bereits mehrere Preise gewonnen hat,
stellten ein breites Spektrum hochklassiger Folkmusik vor, energiereich und stilvoll mit viel Leidenschaft gespielt. Im Mittelpunkt steht
die charmante Geigerin und Sängerin Anna Esslemont, sehr effektiv eingesetzt wird die Bodhran von Cormac Byrne, der ebenfalls
Gründungsmitglied ist. Als neues Mitglied wurde Kevin Dempsey präsentiert, dessen Fähigkeiten als Gitarrist seit Jahren bekannt sind.
Leider waren meine Fotots des Gigs wegen der Lichtverhältnisse nicht scharf genug (es regnete unaufhörlich).

The three members of award-winning Uiscedwr (gaelic word for "water", pronounced "ish-kadooeer") from Manchester performed a wide
variety of premiere league Folk with tremendous energy, passion and style. Singer and violin player Anna Esslemont is the charming
center of their set. Cormac Byrne, a founder member like Anna Esslemont plays the bodhran very effectively. New to the line-up was
Kevin Dempsey, whose skills as a guitar player have ben well known for many years. Unfortunately my photographs weren't sharp
enough because of the bad light (still raining).

 Um 16.00 Uhr war die Losziehung am Stand des Katharine House Hospice angesagt. Für mein Fahrrad waren
Extra-Lose verkauft worden, insgesamt 113 zu 2 Pfund, Erlös zugunsten der Sabine Dörges Stiftung also 216 Pfund,
ca. 320 EURO - eine feine Sache. Hauptpreis der anderen Verlosung war eine Gitarre mit den Unterschriften von
Fairport Convention. Das Fahrrad ging an Pat Swash, die unweit von Banbury wohnt.

At 4 o'clock the drawing of the raffle tickets took place at the Katharine House Hospice stall took place. For my bicycle
they had sold extra tickets for 2 pounds each, 113 all in all, which means 216 pounds for the Sabine Dörges Stiftung
for childhood and teenage cancer. I was very happy about this. The main prize of the other raffle was a guitar
signed by Fairport Convention. The raffling of these tickets made about 900 pounds. The bike went to local girl Pat Swash.

A few weeks after Cropredy Dot Tagg wrote to "Forever Young":

"Hello Walter,
Hope you had safe journey back to Germany, less tiring than cycling over here! I have sent a cheque for £216 to
Ilse-IrmgardDorges at Sabine-Dorges-Stiftung being the proceeds of the raffle of your bike.
There was an article in our local newspaper about you and the lucky winner of your bike with a photograph
of me presenting it to her which I thought you would like.As it is not in digital form can you give me your
postal address so that I can post it to you.Our Hospice stall made nearly £1000 from donated items at
Cropredy and we also made £2014 from the festival raffle so we were very pleased with everyone’s
support over the 3 days.We’ve been looking at your website, it’s very interesting.

Nach zehn Jahren kehrten sie zurück nach Cropredy. Das rockige Trio wurde von Bob Harris einmal
als eine der besten britischen Livebands bezeichnet. Der Regen ließ nach, und die Hamsters waren für mich und
meinen jungen Freund Daniel aus Worms, ein Schüler von Ulla, der sein zweites Cropredy feierte, das Ende eines verschlafenen
Samstagnachmittag. Sie rockten los und liessen unsere Körper in Bewegung geraten. Mittlerweile hatte ich vor Freude
über den erfreulichen Losverkauf Mick am Veranstalter-Caravan einen Cognac spendiert, und zu meiner
allergrößten Freude schenkte mir Mick Bullard ein T-Shirt von Freeway Jam.

A welcome return to Cropredy for The Hamsters. This rocking three-piece was described by Bob Harris as "...fabulous,
one of Britain's very best live bands." The rain stopped and The Hamsters were, at least for me and friend Daniel from
Worms (a scholar of Ulla's celebrating his second Cropredy) .. so, the Hamsters were the end of a sleepy saturday
afternoon. They rocked along and made us moving our bodies. Meanwhile I had spent a cognac for Mick at the organizer's caravan
in order to celebrate the selling of the tickets for my bicycle. Seconds later Mick Bullard gave me a Freeway Jam T shirt.
What a beautiful day !!!

Zum Set der Hamsters gehörten natürlich die gern gespielten Hendrix-Klassiker "Voodoo Chile" und "All along the watchtower"
(geschrieben natürlich von Mr. Zimmerman), dem sie als Intro die Antikriegsversion von "Star spangled banner" voranstellten.
Sie spielten auch Mickey Jupps "Brother doctor, sister nurse", im Original 1978 eingespielt mit Dave Mattacks,
Gary Brooker und Chris Spedding.  In Erinnerung habe ich auch noch einen "Mississippi Delta Blues with an Essex feel"
und Dave Edmunds' "Sweet little Lisa". Wir alle waren jetzt in bester Stimmung.

Die Sängerin aus Nashville hatte 1992 mit dem Album "You hold the key" Erfolg - mit dabei damals: Simon Nicol und Maartin Allcock.
Es war der erste Auftritt dieser fantastischen Songschreiberin in Cropredy. Maartin Allcock, Neil Marshall und Pete Zorn waren ihre Band.
Sie sang eine großartige Version von Stevie Wonders "Sir Duke", als große Überraschung (von Ulla mitgesungen) "Salve Regina" von
Anton Bruckner und zum Abschluß ihren Hit "Dancer to the drum".

Pete Zorn, Maartin Allcock

Had some success in 1992 with her "You hold the key" album feat. Simon Nicol and Maartin Allcock. The first Cropredy appearance by
Nashville-based Beth Nielsen Chapman who is equally well-known as a fantastic songwriter and a great live performer. She was joined by

Fairport Convention

Dann war Fairport dran. Es regnete längst nicht mehr. Die Stimmung war auf dem Höhepunkt.

Dann passierte mir das Unverzeihliche:  die in den vergangenen 16 Tagen angesammelte Müdigkeit kam bei
mir ausgerechnet jetzt endgültig heraus. Ich schlief auf meinem kleinen Campingstuhl ein und verpasste das Finale.
Volker und Daniel mussten mich am Schluß wecken. Ich kann es gar nicht fassen, daß mir das passiert ist.

Then I experienced the inexcusible: all the tiredness that had been hiding during the 16 days that were behind me
came out now. I fell asleep on my little camping chair. Volker and Daniel had to wake me up after the finale.

Am Sonntag gab es, bei gutem Wetter, das Cricket-Match. Der Cropredy Cricket Club gewann äußerst knapp,
mit 168:165 gegen die Fairport-Mannschaft. Als das Match abgepfiffen wurde, hätte ein weiterer Ball für die Fairporter
zum Sieg gereicht.

Sunday was Cricket time again. The weather was fine. Cropredy Cricket club won 168:165 to Fairport. One more
ball and Fairport would have won.

In Cropredy in Oxfordshire the Cherwell takes its course

Für eine Nacht blieben ich und Ulla auf dem Zeltplatz in Great Bourton. Vorher aber ging es noch ins
"Brasenose" zum Pub Quiz. Mit dabei Dave Pegg, Mick Toole, Ron Schoet. Pegg summte uns eine Beach Boys
Melodie vor, die wir erraten mussten. Es war "I get around". Unser Rateteam nannte sich "The Young Ones", und
es wurde der alte Cliff Richard Hit angestimmt, spätestens als wir die Gewinner des Abends waren.

Sunday night me and Ulla stayed at the campsite in Great Bourton. But before that we went to the pub quiz
at the "Brasenose", Dave Pegg, Mick Toole and Ron Schoet. Pegg hummed a Beach Boys tune to us, which
we had to recognize. It was "I get around". Our team was called "The young ones". At least when
we had won the quiz we began to sing the old Cliff Richard hit .
